Top Ten Internet Time Killers (that aren’t WordPress)

I find myself at work every moring, not quite ready to commit to the days tasks.  I need something to get me going, to wake my brain up, to give me the energy required to make it through the day…so I get a cup of coffee.  Then I turn my computer on and start trolling the internet for fun things to look at in order to delay the beginning of my work day for as long as possible.  So, here are the things I look at.  (And just to be clear, I have absolutely no affiliation with ANY of these websites…so I’m not promoting anything that will in some way help me.  None of these sites are even aware I exist.)  Enjoy!

1.) Cracked- The best in comedic lists and random articles dripping with sarcasm; it’s usually the first site I visit each morning when I get to work…and then spend the next couple of hours as they usually post 3 to 4 items each day of the week.  To check it out, click here

2.) 11points- This is a great list blog; it’s actually my favorite pure list website who instead of doing top ten, always do eleven.  Why eleven? Because ten is for cowards.  It’s a considerably large and busy website that is still completely written and managed by one guy.  He has a pretty down to earth and comical view on life that everyone can appreciate.  To check it out, click here.

3.) Stumble Upon- This is one of the coolest websites I visit and could literally spend hours here just dicking around.  Basically, for those living under a rock who don’t know, you just sign up, tell them what interests you and hit the ‘Stumble’ button.  It takes you to random websites based on what your interests are.  From there you can give the page a thumbs up or a thumbs down, which Stumble Upon then saves in its little database and draws upon for inspiration to pick the next random website.  It allows you to view pages you never would have come across by simply googling key words.  To check it out, click here.

4.) the Chive- This is a hilarious photo-centric website that has a little something for everyone, including: sports, random, funny, videos and of course for the guys out there…girls.  If you have some time to kill doing nothing in particular, give the Chive a visit and thumb through the thousands of hilarious pictures they have.  Hell, according to their tagline they’re “Probably the Best Site in the World.”  To check it out, click here.

5.) Fark- This is a must-see-everyday kind of site.  They bring the odd, funny, inane, insane, weird, amusing and scary news of the world right to your door step (or screen if you want to be technical), all in one easy-to-use headline packed website.  The best thing about it is each headline and subsequent link is brought to you by fellow readers.  You can submit anything you like as long as it’s interesting and has an original and funny headline written by you.  Then the staff hand-pick the twenty or so submissions that are featured on the front page each day.  To check it out, click here.

6.) Dam You Auto Correct- The title pretty much says it all.  I-Phone users post conversations they have that include auto corrections that aren’t what the texter had intended to type.  Texts between parents and their kids create some of the more awkward yet side-splittingly hilarious exchanges.  Be forewarned, it’s easy to get sucked into the page and say “ok ok…one more then I’m done”.  There’s never just one more…  To check it out, click here.

7.) Oddee- This is a mesh between 11points and the Chive.  It’s another photo-centric website but done in top ten format using only the minimal of captions…if anything at all.  Oddee brings you the wild, weird and odd of the world around us “from science to advertising and technology”.  It’s another quick time killer that I check every morning.  To check it out, click here.

8.) People of Wal-Mart- I wrote about them a few posts back and I can’t recommend them enough.  The entire site is basically a satire on where American culture and dress has fallen to.  If aliens were to visit People of Wal-Mart and that site only, they would think we’re all fat, disgusting slobs who dress ourselves in the dark (unless they’re an insect-like race, then we’d just look like a very satisfying dinner).  Anyway, for that “Oh shit, are they wearing what I think they’re wearing?” type of shock value, give People of Wal-Mart a shot.  To check it out, click here.

9.) BoingBoing- This is another reader submitted blog that feature about 20 articles a day.  There’s no real organization to what is shown.  If you submit something and the editor’s like it, it goes up on the front page…simple as that.  So there’s a mish-mash of articles ranging from news and reviews, to observations and humor.  There’s a little something for everyone.  To check it out, click here.

10.) Physics Games24- This is the first and obviously only game site I’ll mention…and it’s one I visit every day during my lunch break.  It’s a place of hundreds of little puzzle games that are based on the rules of simple Newtonian physics, i.e. gravity, trajectory, velocity and so forth.  The most popular physics style game out at the moment is Angry Birds.  However, that’s just a small sample of the different styles of games offered.  Be forewarned, most are extremely addictive.  They’re all 100% free, no sign up needed, just click and play.  Thirty seconds, one commercial and a whole lot of excitement later, you’re playing games.  To check it out, click here.

I like the onion but sometimes I feel like it's becoming a paradoy of itself…I don't know if that makes sense.Anyway, I do like it though and perhaps it will make the next top 10 list…

I love love love collegehumor.com, but it's not exactly SFW a lot of times and because I do most of my blogging stuff at work, it doesn't fly for me.As a matter of fact, my work blocked that site!Lame.

Stuffwhitepeoplelike; this one I have not been to, but I'm going to check it out as soon as I'm done writing this reply.I'll let you know what I think, but from the title…it sounds hilarious. Thanks for the suggestions and for reading!

Great! Just what I needed — an entire list of time wasters to which I can become addicted! Crap! And the really sad thing is, my IT guy installed an application that’s supposed to block me from certain types of websites. Problem is, I own the company for which I slave. I have all the administrator passwords. All he did was slow me down. So with the addition of your list, I’ll have to show up at the crack of dawn so I can get all my new timewasters in before my coffee break. Gee, thanks 😉

  5. Now I will never get any work done! No lies, these are probably the best time wasters the Nets has given us that isn’t porn. Good one!

yeah, I read your people of walmart post earlier in the week. Then I got STUCK there as time passed and my plans for productive work piddled to nothing. That web site is such a freak show.

Great- Just frakkin great 😦 I’m trying to get a post out and I read this. I already visit four of these sites fairly regularly and now I need to check out the other ones so no new post this week or month. The world will be a far worse place because of that and now it’s all your fault. I need to go see some funny texting mistakes now….

  8. I havent visited most of the sites you have listed here. However, I have used StumbleUpon extensively while goofing off at work. There was a period when I had no work at work. :O I survived on StumbleUpon during that time.

    Great post.

Jesus Christ, thanks for enabling me goofing off even more. I will say that DYAC routinely makes me come close to wetting my pants in laughter.

    • graysonjack says:

Haha, you’re very welcome. Yeah, I love DYAC. There’s another one I thought about adding that’s just as funny called ‘texts from last night’. Do you know that one? If not, that will give you hours of enjoyment as well. Thanks for reading!
